The name "America" first appeared on a map produced by German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in 1507. In honor of Vespucci, he shows the name in large letters on the map of what is now South America. It was the Italian explorer who first proposed the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern limit, but were part of an unknown landmass. The Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator applied the name "America" to the entire Western Hemisphere on his own world map in 1538.
