This ghost of a city, a quiet testimony to a gone dream, is filled with the ghosts of old grandeur and glory. Due to a lack of adequate water supply, the ambitious but shortsighted monarch abandoned this splendid stronghold soon after it was completed. Some of the features of this fascinating fortification include the marble tomb of the saint "Salim Chisti" and the "Bulland Darwaza," the world's highest gatehouse. The Taj Mahal, best described as "poetry in marble" due to its beauty, elegance, and fine craftsmanship, is located in Agra. But that's not the only thread running through Agra's imposing great arch; there is a slew of palaces and monuments harkening back to the Mughal era.

Mumtaz Mahal, the 'Lady of the Taj,' was Shahjahan's loving wife, and this monument was created in her honor. Without a question, it is the most lavish memorial to love ever constructed. The Taj Mahal was built in 1631 and took 22 years to finish. Workers came from all around the country and Central Asia; 20,000 people were engaged to make this crazy fantasy a reality. The Agra Fort, which was erected by three of the greatest Mughal kings, is one of the numerous landmarks that Agra is proud of. The building of this massive edifice began in 1565, during Akbar's reign, and lasted until Shahjahan's reign.
